Students who use AI more report better engagement and learning at an Indonesian university

A survey study at Institut Teknologi Kalimantan examined whether students' use of AI and the quality of campus digital infrastructure relate to how well they learn. Student engagement was tested as a pathway linking the two to learning effectiveness.

The increasing integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technologies into higher education has created new opportunities to support the learning process. However, the effectiveness of technology utilization is not solely determined by technical availability, but also by students' active involvement in learning activities. In brief

The findings suggest that universities may get more learning benefit when technology is paired with activities that actively involve students. However, the data are self-reported survey responses from one institution, so they show association rather than proven causation and may not apply elsewhere.

Main points

  1. The study surveyed 347 active students across faculties and cohorts at Institut Teknologi Kalimantan.
  2. Participants were chosen through multistage stratified sampling and answered a five-point Likert questionnaire.
  3. Both AI usage and digital infrastructure had positive, significant effects on engagement and learning effectiveness.
  4. Engagement partially mediated these effects, and AI usage had the larger total contribution.

The gain

Among 347 Institut Teknologi Kalimantan students, greater AI use was associated with higher engagement and better learning effectiveness, and AI contributed more than digital infrastructure.

The rundown

The researchers framed the work around the idea that technology availability alone does not determine effectiveness; students' active involvement in learning also matters. They therefore modeled engagement as a mediating variable.

Data were analyzed with Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling using a second-order construct built through the Hierarchical Component Model.

Because engagement only partially mediated the effects, AI use and infrastructure also relate to learning effectiveness directly, with AI use contributing more in total than infrastructure.
