Scientists develop first-ever “broad-spectrum” bird flu vaccine using AI

Scientists used AI to design a vaccine capable of protecting against a wide range of bird flu variants. That’s a game changer for national biosecurity and more resilient public health systems, they say. Scientists at Cambridge University have developed a new vaccine using Artificial Intelligence that targets multiple strains of bird flu in one shot, rather than providing immunity to one variant. The jab could protect even from variants that haven’t

The gain

In a Cambridge animal study, an AI-designed bird flu vaccine fully protected mice and ferrets against genetically distinct variants, while only half the animals given the WHO's existing vaccine survived.

What this doesn’t fix

The protection was shown only in mice and ferrets; the vaccine still has to be tested in human clinical trials.

How to check it yourself, without trusting this page

Download any version from /api/record/TRV-2026-2408 and hash its canonical field yourself, for example with shasum -a 256. You should get its content_hash. Each version’s text also ends with prev:and the hash of the version before it (version 1 points to 64 zeros). If anyone had changed a single character of any version after it was saved, those hashes wouldn’t line up.
