Comparison of an AI-enabled single-lead ECG monitor and point-of-care testing for detecting intradialytic hypokalemia

Background: Intradialytic hypokalemia is an underrecognized complication of maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). While point-of-care (POC) testing offers rapid biochemical confirmation, it remains limited by its intermittent nature. Artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled electrocardiography (ECG) provides a potential noninvasive alternative for trend monitoring; however, its performance in MHD has not been compared with POC testing against a central laboratory standard. Methods: This single-center prospective study com…

Current reading — problem

The AI-enabled ECG was far less accurate than point-of-care testing for diagnosing low potassium (AUC 0.722 vs. 0.996), and its error rose to 1.000 mmol/L during hypokalemia.

What this doesn’t fix

The study was single-center with small training and test groups, and the authors say its ability to improve outcomes or safely reduce invasive testing still needs formal prospective decision-impact studies.

Fetch the canonical text of any version from /api/record/TRV-2026-2321 and hash it yourself — for example shasum -a 256 on the saved canonical field. The result must equal content_hash, and each version’s text ends with prev:followed by the prior version’s hash (version 1 chains to 64 zeros). If a single character of any version had been altered since certification, the chain would not reproduce.
