Being Sensed, Scored, and 'Connected': A Social-Gerontological Critique of AI-Driven Loneliness Detection for Older Adults in Taiwan
Enthusiasm for artificial intelligence (AI) that continuously infers emotion promises to change how care systems identify older adults at risk of loneliness. We use AI-driven loneliness detection to mean systems that infer loneliness, or a proxy for it, from sensed data rather than from a person's answer, rendering the inference as a score or category used in care; they range from facial and vocal emotion recognition to behavioral risk prediction from everyday activity data. Engineering feasibility, more than an…
Before any routine deployment in Taiwan, AI loneliness detection could recast a relational experience as an individual biometric deficit, misread culturally patterned emotional restraint as noise, and slide from care toward surveillance.
The analysis is anticipatory because the technology is not yet in routine use in Taiwan, so the tensions are projected risks rather than observed outcomes.

How to verify without trusting this page
Fetch the canonical text of any version from /api/record/TRV-2026-1774 and hash it yourself — for example shasum -a 256 on the saved canonical field. The result must equal content_hash, and each version’s text ends with prev:followed by the prior version’s hash (version 1 chains to 64 zeros). If a single character of any version had been altered since certification, the chain would not reproduce.
