Large language models unlock the ecology of species interactions
Species interactions shape population dynamics, geographic distributions, evolutionary trajectories, and responses to environmental change. Yet data on these interactions remain scarce across broad spatial, temporal, and taxonomic scales because they are difficult to collect in the field. One promising source of interaction data is citizen science platforms, which contain billions of biodiversity observations, often accompanied by unstructured text comments that may document interactions among organisms. Advance…
Language models can pull interaction types and participating species out of multilingual citizen science comments with high accuracy, which could widen the coverage of scarce ecological interaction data.
The authors state the approach depends on appropriate validation, expert review and attention to data privacy for both users and sensitive species, and it was demonstrated in only two case studies.

How to verify without trusting this page
Fetch the canonical text of any version from /api/record/TRV-2026-1480 and hash it yourself — for example shasum -a 256 on the saved canonical field. The result must equal content_hash, and each version’s text ends with prev:followed by the prior version’s hash (version 1 chains to 64 zeros). If a single character of any version had been altered since certification, the chain would not reproduce.
