Developing a generative AI chatbot to support students' higher-order thinking in STEM education
Higher-order thinking is a key component of science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) reasoning and supports students' ability to reflect on their ideas, make connections, and generalize across contexts. We report a new approach to the use of generative AI in STEM education, in which we are developing a chatbot that aims to engage students in higher-order thinking, rather than giving instructional content. We describe a proof of concept test of whether interaction with our generative artificial intell…
In a pilot with 33 fifth- and sixth-grade students, a prompting chatbot drew out higher-order thinking talk about ratio strategies, and students' talk rose with the chatbot's own.
The study is described as a proof of concept with only 33 students, so it shows that talk can be elicited, not that learning improves or that results generalize.

How to verify without trusting this page
Fetch the canonical text of any version from /api/record/TRV-2026-1384 and hash it yourself — for example shasum -a 256 on the saved canonical field. The result must equal content_hash, and each version’s text ends with prev:followed by the prior version’s hash (version 1 chains to 64 zeros). If a single character of any version had been altered since certification, the chain would not reproduce.
