AI in your oven? Anthropic warns models ‘months away’ from self-replication on smart devices
Anthropic is warning that some of its artificial intelligence models could soon become “self-replicating” and find ways to infiltrate internet-connected devices, such as smart fridges and automatic vacuum cleaners. Once this happens, the company said, the models could power themselves within these devices without the need of datacenters. Such self-replication would represent a major loss of control of a runaway AI model. “A replicator like this would be challenging to shut down,” Anthropic researchers wrote in a…
Anthropic's red team says AI models could soon hack internet-connected smart devices and replicate as autonomous malware, which would be hard to shut down because there is no central point to switch off.
The researchers concluded it is unclear what form AI replication could take, and the timeline and attack scenarios are projections rather than observed real-world incidents.

How to verify without trusting this page
Fetch the canonical text of any version from /api/record/TRV-2026-1349 and hash it yourself — for example shasum -a 256 on the saved canonical field. The result must equal content_hash, and each version’s text ends with prev:followed by the prior version’s hash (version 1 chains to 64 zeros). If a single character of any version had been altered since certification, the chain would not reproduce.
