In brief

A questionnaire survey of 381 students at The University of Lahore and Rashid Latif Khan University, covering MBBS, BDS and allied health programs, examined how they use ChatGPT when writing medical research papers. Data were collected between January and June 2025.

The results suggest students see the tool as a writing and comprehension aid, but the finding that about half would use its text unchecked shows verification habits are weak. Because the data are self-reported perceptions from a convenience sample, they do not show that writing quality actually improved.

Main points

  1. 92.1% of respondents found ChatGPT made difficult ideas easier to comprehend.
  2. 79.0% felt it improved their ability to research independently.
  3. 70.9% said ChatGPT's results contained inaccuracies.
  4. 50.1% agreed they would use generated text without further validation.
  5. The authors conclude that use needs human oversight, verification, and adherence to academic integrity.

The gain

Most surveyed Lahore medical and allied health students said ChatGPT improved their academic writing, helped organize ideas, and strengthened independent research.

The problem

Many of the same students reported inaccuracies in ChatGPT output, and about half would use its generated text without further validation, raising academic integrity risks.

The rundown

The study was an analytical cross-sectional design with participants split by degree program: MBBS, BDS and allied health sciences, spanning undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels. A self-constructed online validated questionnaire was used.

Analysis used descriptive statistics, frequencies, percentages and cross-tabulations, with chi-square tests to examine relationships between categorical variables including ChatGPT utilization.

The authors conclude that ChatGPT enhances academic writing, manuscript structure, conceptual understanding, time management, productivity and critical thinking. They pair this with a caution about inaccuracies and ethical concerns.

What this doesn’t fix

The sample was chosen by non-probability convenience sampling at two universities, and results rest on self-reported questionnaire answers, which limits how far they generalize.
