A multimodal context-aware AI recommender for smart farming
Agricultural productivity in developing regions is significantly affected by plant diseases and pest infestations, making early detection and timely intervention essential for improving crop yield and food security. This study proposes a multimodal context-aware AI recommendation framework that integrates maize leaf image analysis and environmental conditions to support intelligent agricultural decision-making. The framework combines a deep learning-based image classification model with weather variables, includ…

In brief
Researchers built a framework that pairs a deep learning model reading maize leaf images with weather variables such as temperature, humidity, rainfall and solar radiation. The fused model diagnoses three conditions: healthy plants, aphid infestation and maize streak virus infection. A recommendation engine then combines rule-based agronomic knowledge with the Qwen2.5:7B language model to write guidance for farmers.
The work matters because plant diseases and pests undermine yields and food security in developing regions, where early detection is essential. Still, the results come from one image dataset and a 61-day weather record for a single location, and the recommendations were scored by another language model, so field performance for farmers remains untested in the source.
Main points
- The image-only model reached 91% accuracy, and the multimodal fusion model reached 94%.
- The weather-only model performed worse because environmental characteristics overlapped among disease classes.
- Recommendations were scored 4.80/5.00 across safety, technical accuracy, relevance, actionability and clarity.
- Evaluation used Llama 3.1:8B in a blind LLM-based framework rather than human reviewers.
The gain
Combining leaf image analysis with weather variables classified three maize conditions more accurately than image-only analysis, and an LLM-based engine produced farmer recommendations that scored highly in an automated evaluation.
The rundown
The study used maize leaf images from the YEESI Lab dataset and a 61-day environmental dataset from the NASA POWER database, obtained for the coordinates of Morogoro, Tanzania. Three conditions were classified: healthy plants, aphid infestation and maize streak virus.
The architecture has two stages. A multimodal fusion model diagnoses the crop condition. A context-aware engine then merges rule-based agronomic knowledge with the Qwen2.5:7B large language model to generate natural-language recommendations.
Generated advice was judged by Llama 3.1:8B in a blind evaluation across five quality dimensions. The authors say the scores indicate agronomically consistent, context-aware and actionable recommendations.
